Few days ago I was reading the book of R.Buckminster Fuller "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth" . It is about understanding our planet earth as a spaceship upon which we are embarked. Planet earth is a system and at the same time part of a larger system the universe. To understand universe Buckmister Fuller refers to the notion of General Systems Theory as a tool. By employing it we have always to start thinking of the biggest and most comprehensive systems, inventorying all the known variables, define the limits of the system. I am always fascinated by this device, our computers. As designers we use it often to formulate our ideas and concepts into 2d or 3d by manipulating points and vertexes. The computer of course is not based on a system of points or vertexes. This is just another system, a subset of the main computer system. On a diagram so far, our laptops, desktops, notebooks are calculation devices based on a binary system that represent their end results on our computer screens either on pixel or vector format which as a consequence constitute the simulation of 3d/2d space where we design our objects. So, basically we are dealing with a very powerful medium of representation. Furthermore we developed tools so that to edit and manipulate our digital creations and at the same time to give them qualities similar to the physical world. And these are: Scale, Material/Texture, Function.
At the moment we specify more more these representations that we create in order to reach the perfect simulation. I was interested in the opposite direction. What would define a system of objects scaleless, immaterial, functionless..
I was researching about this well known open-source system in Rapid Prototyping the RepRap project. RepRap stands for self-replicating rapid prototype printers..It seems so close the moment that everyone of us will have a small factory inside his house to print everything he needs and desires.
